Despite fewer occurrences, losses from cryptocurrency rug pulls have increased dramatically, jumping 6,499% this year, according to DappRadar.

Increased Financial Losses from Rug Pulls

Financial losses from crypto rug pulls surged dramatically in 2025, reaching nearly $6 billion. This represents a 6,499% increase compared to the $90 million lost during the same period in 2024. The majority of these losses, approximately 92%, are attributed to the collapse of the Mantra (OM) project. The incident involved a sudden token sell-off following large transfers to cryptocurrency exchanges.

Decreased Frequency of Incidents

Despite the significant increase in financial losses, the number of reported rug pull incidents has actually decreased. Early 2024 saw 21 occurrences, while only 7 have been reported so far this year. This marks a 66% reduction in frequency year-over-year. The scams are becoming more sophisticated and utilizing polished branding and narratives.

Shifting Sector Focus

Previously, rug pulls primarily targeted decentralized finance (DeFi) protocols, NFTs, and memecoins. Currently, the majority of these incidents are occurring within the memecoin sector. This shift highlights evolving tactics employed by malicious actors. The web3 ecosystem faces ongoing challenges regarding security and transparency.

Sophistication of Schemes

Rug pulls are increasingly sophisticated, indicating a move towards more carefully planned and executed scams. Teams are employing polished branding and well-developed narratives to attract investors. The rise in value lost emphasizes the need for greater due diligence and caution within the crypto space.
