China’s trade performance in September exceeded forecasts, showing strong expansion.

September Trade Data

China’s exports rose significantly in September, jumping 8.3% year-on-year to $328.6 billion, surpassing both August's figures and market forecasts. Imports also saw a substantial increase, rising 7.4% to $238.1 billion, exceeding expectations. This rebound indicates recovering overseas demand and some front-loading of shipments ahead of upcoming holidays.

Escalating Trade Tensions

Recent actions by both the U.S. and China have heightened trade tensions, including threats of new tariffs and export controls. The U.S. has threatened 100% tariffs on Chinese exports and restrictions on software, while China has expanded restrictions on rare earth exports and broadened its ‘unreliable entities’ blacklist. These measures risk undermining progress made during earlier trade negotiations.

Port Fees and Future Outlook

Both countries are set to impose reciprocal charges on docking vessels, beginning October 14. China views the U.S. fees as a violation of trade principles, potentially increasing costs for U.S. consumers and impacting shippers. China’s spokesperson urged a return to dialogue and negotiation and expressed concern about the broader impact of new levies.
