Lombard shifts $1 billion in BTC to Chainlink’s CCIP following a $292 million kelp exploit.

Lombard's Strategic Migration to Chainlink CCIP

Lombard Finance is moving over $1 billion in Bitcoin-backed assets, including LBTC and BTC.b, from LayerZero to Chainlink's Cross-Chain Interoperability Protocol. The protocol has declared CCIP its exclusive cross-chain infrastructure for these key assets. This move is part of a broader security upgrade designed to expand Bitcoin liquidity across various decentralized finance networks. The migration also includes adopting Chainlink's Cross-Chain Token standard, which supports a burn-and-mint model.

Security Concerns Driving Industry Shifts

The decision follows heightened industry scrutiny regarding cross-chain bridge vulnerabilities. This focus intensified after the major Kelp DAO exploit drained substantial funds from a LayerZero-powered bridge. Consequently, several major crypto firms, including Kraken and Solv, have announced or begun moving assets to Chainlink CCIP. Collectively, these migrations represent an estimated $4 billion in risk mitigation across the DeFi sector.

Benefits of Chainlink's Infrastructure

Chainlink CCIP offers a robust defense-in-depth architecture, featuring independent node operators and built-in rate limits. These controls act as circuit breakers, limiting asset movement if abnormal activity is detected. Furthermore, the platform offers institutional certifications, enhancing trust for large-scale adoption. This architecture allows Lombard to maintain its own Security Consortium layer for enhanced transfer validation.
