The President criticized Ulbricht's harsh sentence, consisting of two life terms plus 40 years without parole, as "ridiculous." This move gained support from the crypto community, with the Free Ross campaign expressing gratitude on social media. Ulbricht, convicted of seven charges related to running Silk Road, a dark web marketplace for illegal drugs and goods, was arrested in 2013 and sentenced to life without parole in 2015. Trump initially showed support for Ulbricht during the Libertarian National Convention, promising to commute his sentence if re-elected. After winning the November elections, Ulbricht thanked Trump's supporters, hoping for a "second chance" at freedom.
